About the Temple

One Shri   Aruna  Kandaswamy  an ardent devotee started his  search for  old records 25 years back to know the history of the temple.  But he could not succeed immediately and hence became again a householder and returned to Chennai.  After many a year,   he restarted his search again.   He came  across one sanyaasi  known as ‘Saadhu ‘ Subramanyam ,  kaliyuga agaththiya  siddhar,  in  Ammanath Thaangal  village in the Valaaja Taluk.  The  Saadhu  is offering worship to the idol of Sri Agasthiayar  made from the mixture of Nine poisons installed in his village.  He is also good in siddha medicine and treats the local people.   He is also aware of the martial art called  ‘Varmam’.   He gave a leaf scroll  of the sage  Agasthiayar .  It contained a reading  to say that a statue of Sri Agasthiyar made from a mixture  of Nine poisons would get installed in the Azhagi  Amman temple with all the rituals.  Thereafter it will provide an opening to spread the message of  Atharvana  Veda  from  there.   The name  Kaavith Thandalam appear to be the derivative from “ Karaththoliyaam Thamizh   Munivar   Kaavi   Kamandala  Thandum  Uraththoliyaam  Thavam   Irundha   Idam”.

The leaf scroll is said to have been taken out from the readings of  Eswara, sugar and Agaththiyar Naadi  given by the Saadhu.  It  reads as under:

“Mandakathiludhiththa  Soorargalil  Magida sooranai   Vadam  cheidhume  Kandaththith thaanmavai  Odukki   udhiraththai  kudithu   adhirndhume  Kundandhinaal  Adharvana Kaalikku  chinam thaniyaada   vagaiyilume  Mundandhilutra  vagaikku  moovar  evaraalum   saanthiyumaame.

Saanthiyume  Adaiyaadhu Gorththaandavaththinai saanthiyaakiyume thaanthiyumaai  kandu  agaththiyanum  ingu vandu  paalatrang karaiyilume kaanthiyumaai kaavi mandala thandamum  vaithu endhirarasiththume  oondhiyumaai   utkaarndhu   thavame  cheidhu  saanthiyaakiya  Idamumame.”

Accordingly a statue  of  Guru  Agasthiyar  measuring about 15 inches was installed on 18.2.2009 at Kaavith Thandalam,  on  the day of Thai Poosam,  an auspicious occasion celebrated with all grandeur  observing  sacrificial fire accompanied with recitation of mantras.  A copper plate with six petals – Sixty Four along with the inscribed mantras was got installed in the temple and prayers were being offered regularly from then on. The reading in the scroll pronounces that the message of Atharvana Veda be spread across the globe from the  Azhagiya  Amman Temple.  The temple is in a ramshackle condition requiring a new structure.   The work has to be taken up immediately to carry on the divine wish to fulfil the propagation of Atharvana Veda.  The renovated temple will be known as Azhagi  Amman  to bless the devotees.  Her divine form will be popularised  as Dakshina Kaali  akin to Nav Kaali in West Bengal.

THE DEVOTEES ARE REQUESTED TO DONATE LIBERALLY TO THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION   PROJECT  OF  A NEW STRUCTURE TO HOUSE  THE MOTHER -  AZHAGI YA   AMMAN   and TO  SEEK  HER  BLESSINGS.
